Nancy's chapter on Service Learning and Teaching
Nurturing Christians as Reflective Educators is a scholarly journal-- proceedings of the Second Biennial Symposium for Christian Professional Education Faculty from Across North America. The 25 chapters are the edited versions of the schlarly presentations given by the authors about how it is that teachers are prepared to serve the schools of North America but done so distinctly from a Christian wordlview perspective.
This represents ongoing research by this group of faculty who meet every two years to present latest results and then publish an additional journal, thus building the collection of scholarly literature on how to nurture and develop teachers who "teach Christianly." Indeed, "teaching Christianly" has become a term in North American Educational circles because of the work of this group and its members over the last ten years.
From the Publisher
Nurturing Christians as Reflective Educators presents the cutting edge of research among educational scholars who approach teacher-preparation from a distinctly Christian perspective. The 25 authors have much to say about the best practices of teaching, and, more importantly, how to inculcate these practices into the new generations of teacher candidates across North America. Whether it is “Nurturing for Teaching Christianly,” Foundational Issues,” Nurturing for Diversity,” or looking toward the twenty-first century needs in the “new breed of teacher” the reader will find much to deepen and broaden understanding about the complexities of developing the best of teaching skills in new candidates. This volume speaks mountains about what is good in teacher education. And the best news is that it does not stop with the last page of the book for the group is already at work researching and producing the next steps of this investigation. More will be coming in not too distant days.
About the Editors
Harro VanBrummelen is the Associate Dean of Trinity Western University in British Columbia. He has written many books and is the founder of the organization that has produced this series of scholarly journals. Dan Elliott is the Director of the Educational Administration Credential Program at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles, CA, and has written other works in the field of education.
Both editors have roles to play outside the field of professional education in that they are trained and serve as pastors and church leaders. This common thread has them both viewing professional education and leadership as a distinct call to “serve” that came from the Creator Himself.
Nancy Brashear co-authored a chapter on “Service Learning and Education” in this resource book for educators.
